Due to its central location in the north-west German lowlands and the direct transport connection to the economic center of Oldenburg, Ammerland is a supra-regional hub to seaports in the north-west and the northern Netherlands. The district is conveniently located at the intersection of several motorways and railway lines. The coastal canal flows through the south-west of the district as a stretch of water that is important for shipping. A network of navigable rivers and canals opens up the western Ammerland, which is thereby connected to the Ems territory.
