There are up to 1000 varieties of the popular heather plant in Ammerland in a wide variety of shapes and colours, because the centre of rhododendron breeding in Germany has been here in the north since the 1920s. Nowhere else can you find this variety and quantity. They bloom in front gardens at home, by the wayside, in the growers' fields and of course in the large rhododendron parks.
When does the rhododendron bloom?
That depends on several factors and is therefore not that easy to answer. Depending on the weather in spring, some varieties bloom earlier, others later and some shorter, others longer. From the end of April to the beginning of June however, Ammerland shines in a sea of flowers of white, pink or red rhododendrons.
