Rathausmarkt Apen - favorite places with listening station
The knight, whose residence and official residence was the Aper castle, which was only about 500 m further west, seems to be checking the market place for everything. His gaze may sweep over the market, which may have been happening here since the 16th century.
Presumably he proudly looks at "his" church St. Nikolai from the 13th century, which is located on a hill, a so-called Wurt, so that it is protected from flooding. Danger from the water threatens again and again from the nearby Aper Tief, so that the church also served as a refuge for the Aper population. The knight may one day find his resting place in the cemetery that surrounds them.
But he is sure to see past the church to the south, where enemy troops keep coming up in the Münsterland region and engaging the knight and his master, the Oldenburg count, in armed conflicts. The East Frisians are also a thorn in his side.
Jörg Ridderbusch has created a striking knight who looks serious, proud and watchful. He watches over Apen. His figure fits into the environment and takes z. B. the play of colors of the bricks of the school building behind. The knight thus becomes part of this place to which he belongs as a matter of course - He marks a place that is representative of the entire structure of the old town center: It connects the fortress square, the church and its cemetery as well as the market square, all squares , which are favorite places in the community for many Aper citizens.
This place is equipped with a listening station, which can be activated with a QR code.
